UVA URSI / BEARBERRY
Also known as Uva-Ursi or kinnikinnick and also found under the name of Clasius, Bearberry has been an herb well-known for its medicinal uses as far back as the 13th century. Marco Polo even spoke of it, reporting that the Chinese were using it as a diuretic to treat kidney and urinary problems.
Native Americans were also known to use Bearberry and other herbs in religious ceremonies. In this circumstance it was utilized as a smudge or smoked in a pipe, with the smoke of the burned herbs carrying the smoker`s prayers. Elsewhere, the Cheyenne were also said to have found use for it in treating back sprains, while other tribes found that it was of benefit when applied to sores. European settlers often used it as well, seeking it as a treatment for diseases of the urinary system.
Uva Ursi / Bearberry is a diuretic, urinary antiseptic, and astringent. It does not kill the bacteria that cause urinary tract infection. Instead, it releases complex polysaccharides that keep the bacteria "rooting" in the lining of the bladder and urethra, allowing the infectious microorganisms to be flushed away with the flow of urine. Most authorities on herbal medicine note that uva ursi is more effective when the urine is alkaline, that is, when plant foods (especially leafy greens and dried foods) are eaten in greater quantities than animal foods (smoked fish and hard cheese causing the greatest acidity). In addition to treating urinary tract infections (for which it is approved by the German Commission E), uva ursi has been reported effective against chronic diarrhea, E. coli, high blood pressure, and cold sores, herpes and vaginal infections
Bearberry / Uva Ursi still frequently looked to in modern holistic medicine for many of these same purposes that were known of old. Most commonly it is now used in treating diseases of the bladder, particularly those involving inflammation. Some herbalists also consider it of use as a weight-loss aid, and a great aid in helping infections heal
Uva Ursi was well-known to the Native Americans, who smoked the leaves either alone or mixed with other smoking herbs in their ceremonial pipes, believing that the smoke carried their wishes to the higher powers. They called the herb "Kinnikinnick," which roughly means "smoking mixture."
Not surprising, then, that the leaves ingested in a tea are believed to increase psychic abilities and divination in modern magick. Powdered herb can be sprinkled around the alter area or into burning candles in divination rituals, and leaves can be made into sachets to help increase psychic powers. Dried leaves can be mixed with tobacco or other smokeable herbs and used for meditation and increased psychic abilities. Use this herb to wash your talismans or amulets, in healing spells to increase their potency or to induce visionary dreams
